How to setup a complex inventory item?

What is the best way to setup inventory where you stock the product one way and sell it another way.  For example paint is stocked by finish (gloss, semigloss, etc), quantity (qt, gal), and base (U,M,L), but sold by finish, quantity, and color.  The customer chooses the color which relates to a base plus colorants which are stocked separately (and can be used for many bases) and only fractionally used to turn the base into the desired color.  The customer doesn't need to know anything about bases, only the color they want.  Thousands of colors can be created using various
