UPC Code and Numbers

We are in the process of thinking about setting up Netsuite for bar coding our items.

Do we have to register with GS1(http://www.uc-council.org/) to be able to make this work in netsuite after we pay for the Advanced Inventory Module?

Or once I set i[ up in Netsuite I should be able to assign UPC codes all I want?
