Tricking the UPC Code Feature

We would like to use the bar code feature for fulfillment.  Some of our items have UPCs but many do not.  In the case that they do not, I would like to use our internal item numbers (4-8 digits) as the UPC code.  The problem of course is that if the number in the UPC code field does not conform to the UPC format, it will not print on the label.  Is there a way to trick NS to accept a 4-8 digit number as a valid UPC?  I tried doing 000000001234 but it doesn't accept that.  Any ideas would
