Create PO from SO?

I searched for previous post but couldn't find anything...When I set up transaction forms, I checked box that says "create P.O."  That shows up on my sales order entry form.  However, it is gray and I can't mark it.  Presumably when I create a sales order, I can also create a P.O. to vendor for item, is that correct?  If so, how does one get it to work when it has been checked in the customization area?
