Unable to edit Serial number in Serialised Inventory

Created a Serialised Inventory Item.

Before saving the record, there was a tab "Inventory" with the field "Serial Number" which I was able to type in all the serial numbers.

After saving, a separate TAB "Srrial Number" appeared in the Item Record and  I realised that I can't edit the serial number or add in more numbers.
Why is that?
