Understanding of Unit Type vs UOM

In my understanding,

Unit Type : Length, Weight, Temperature, Time...etc

UOM : kilometer, Meter, Centimeter, Foot, Inch, Kilogram, Gram, Pound, Celsius, Fahrenheit, Day, Hour, Minutes, Roll, Unit, Piece, Set...etc

UOM like we use in field name "Sales Units", "Purchase Units"...etc

Is about correct of my above definition ?

An item assigned with Unit Type = Length and we have transactions with this item, and then we want to change this Unit Type, Netsuite is NOT allow to change... Why is that so ?

However, if an item with UOM = Piece, and some transactions are already with this item also, and then we want to change the "Item Master" so that the UOM = Unit, or UOM = Roll, I tested it is OK to be changed, is there any impact of the changes ? what is the effect to those transactions are already with the wrong UOM ?
