Sourcing item field from preferred vendor

I have a long text on the item form that I want to source from the corresponding field on the preferred vendor for the item.  I have Store Value turned off, Display Type is disabled, Source List is "Preferred Vendor", Source From is the vendor field (same field type on both records).  I've tried creating new items, adding and removing preferred vendors, and it still will not source.  Does anyone have any ideas?
