Monthly Item Usage

I would like to have a field on the item header that is a monthly moving average for each item.  That way my purchasing agent can quickly look at at item to see if he needs to adjust the inventory levels and/or increase his quantity on order.  Struggling to get started, as I don't have the technical expertise to do any scripting.  Any suggestions?
