Convert assembly to serialized assembly

Is it possible to convert an Assembly to a Serialized Assembly, so that the same part number can be retained for the Serialized Assembly? or is that functionality not possible?

Really hoping to avoid having to export all of our assembly data and import it to make them serialized assemblies.
