Average Costing and Open Box or Damaged items

Using Multi-Location inventory and wondering what is the best way to account for open box, damaged, or sample inventory without throwing our average cost off?  We've currently created discrete locations for these types of items where the inventory isn't available, but when we receive them into inventory our average cost for available inventory is affected.  Any way to insulate against that and still track it?
