obsolete item substitution

We have several parts in our database of 5000 part numbers that have numbers that are no longer used.  In our old system this change was noted in the item descriptors and then we would plug in the new number and move on.  For instance you typed in part number 123456 and the description would read NLA - 456789 so you would make a new line and use that part number and erase the old line.

Is there a way in netsuite to automate this?  In other words I want to be able to type in 123456 and have item 456789 come up.  Keep in mind there could be multiple old part numbers all pointing to the same new part number.
