Shipping from two locations

I'm hoping somebody can help with this. We have 2 warehouse locations and stock the same items in both locations. The theory is to ship the items from the nearest warehouse to the customer and/or if there is not enough in one location to ship the quantity we have from one location and ship the rest from the other location. Is anyone doing this and how are they accomplishing this? Are you doing this by writing script? Are you using a transfer order?

Any help would be much appreciated.
