Track serialized component thru to Finished Assembly Item

Short of doing 1 unit builds, has anyone worked out a solution where I can track my serialized components, directly to serialized assembly item which they went into? The only thing I've come up with so far is using some sort of numbering convention on the serial number of the finished good which concatenates the serials of it's components. I'd a stronger link that's easier to report off of if possible.
