Serial/Lot Number Format

Despite my best efforts I cannot figure out a way to establish a required format for serial/lot numbers entered during item receipts.  For example how to set a minimum length for a serial number or prevent symbols such as "%" from being entered as a serial number.  Anyone have any ideas or recommendations?
