Turning on Advanced BOM's

Wondering what the direct consequences of just turning on advanced boms would be to our existing system. We currently use Boms and routing info on all our items but are looking at a change and it affects all our saved items.
What kind of damage control would be i be looking at if we used this change to turn on the advanced boms feature in terms of our existing process and records?
- unfortunately I don't have access to a sandbox at this time so anything I do immediately impacts our live system.
