Script to Auto-Generate Serial Nos

We're using WIP & Routings to build our assembly items. My goal, is to automate the serial # process. I know there's no way to natively do this, but I my logic is pretty simple, and I was hoping we could do this via script. As I'm looking at it, however, it doesn't look possible. On the Work Order Completion, I can't seem to access the inventory detail dialog with a client side script. Before record load, I don't know what the Qty of the completion will be, and I can't submit unless there's a valid value in the inventory detail field.
