Paying Down your Credit Card Account

I am unable to pay down my credit card account (which is a balance sheet account) when writing a check to the credit card company.  Below are the journal entries:

1.  Use Credit Card:
     Debit:  Expense Account (Travel)  XXX
     Credit: Balance Sheet Account (American Express)   XXX

      Transaction > User Credit Card

      This step works fine.

2.  Pay Credit Card Company
     Debit:   Balance Sheet Account (American Express)   XXX
     Credit:  Cash                                                                  XXX
