urgent: customers getting invalid application id error

Hello-
All of a sudden a couple of my customers are getting this error:

Invalid application id: null
Code: USER_ERROR

when using our application. It does not occur when I test with my demo account.

I've asked them to open support cases as well but can anyone here help out with this? Our application has been unchanged and working fine for a long time until now.
