Adding Items to Sales Order with Item Group

When trying to add items to a sales order that contains an item group, I keep getting this error:

"You cannot edit the end of group line.  You must delete the group."

I am only adding items outside the group, and I have itemList.replaceAll set to false. Is there a trick to adding items on a sales order like this?
