parent is null in CustomerSearchBasic results

Hello,

I'm doing a simple CustomerSearchBasic.  When I execute search and there are no filters, the "parent" field of Customer comes back null.  If I put a filter, like on entityId, then "parent" comes back non-null for the same record.

Nothing documented anywhere about this behavior.

Any ideas?
