Customize messages

Am I missing something? Can you add custom fields to messages, such as a note field, or checkbox for some custom setting? Can you trigger workflows on message save or send, such as automatically scheduling a follow-up reminder. What about being able to grab the send action with context (body fields and template vars already parsed) and adding the company mandated privacy disclaimer after send?

There is a message record type in the records browser, but it doesn't look like you can do very much with it.
