Excel File Generation

I am trying to generate Excel files from script in order to work around the problem with NS search sending the results in XLS form as searchresults.xls. I have been able to generate the files (using an example on the support site) that use XML to build the file, but when opening the file, Excel throws error that it corrupted. The nlapiCreatefile needs encoding to create anything other than  a textbase file. Any ideas on how to accomplish this?
