change status of InventoryCount via script

Hi, this is a longshot but hoping there's some way to advance the status of an InventoryCount record from "Open" to "Started". It seems that updating the status for transactions is reserved for backend logic. Just for grins I tried setting the status, statusRef and statuskey fields and updating the record but no change (not surprisingly).

TIA for any clues!
