Search for Customer poNum brings back null values

Taking a short cut here guys on forum versus looking for info in docs and other avenues. Tight time contraint. I am issuing a customer search on poNum with the poNum SearchStringField operator as "@is". How do I prevent records with nulls in the poNum from being returned? I just want to retreive the record(s) with the given poNum.
