How can we show the available inventory in our web store for matrix child items?

If we use <%=getCurrentAttribute('item','quantityavailable')%> in our drill-down template for a Widget available in four colors,  is there any way get...

Widget-001-Red .... 50 available

Widget-001-White .... 80 available

Widget-001-Blue .... 30 available

Widget-001-Green .... 10 available

or, do we always just get the sum of the children.. eg: "170 available"
