How do you know which form is being used?

For the "Advanced PDF/HTML Templates", how do you know which form is being used? I know there is a "Preferred" option that can be checked, but does that always have priority over the other templates?

For example: When printing a transaction record, the document gets converted into a PDF. If there are multiple templates, how do we know which template is being used?
