Set Field Value to carry over organization / individual name from previous form

I've created a button to a custom record form on the partner record. I'm creating a workflow to auto populate the organization/individual name so that it will automatically carry over to the custom record form when the button is pushed.
I've created a workflow with one state to set field value --> before record load. In the parameters I've selected the Field 'Name' which refers to the org/ind name and the from field 'existing alliance' is the shared field . I think that is where I've gone wrong, but the record (join field) drop down, doesn't give me the other (previous form where the button is) form as an option. Existing alliance is a shared field that's on both forms, so i thought that might work.
