Workflow Initiation and Execution Type Equivalents

This might be obvious but what is the script execution type equivalents to workflow? The On Create and On Update Initiations? Are they equivalent to the script execution types like 'create' and 'edit' ONLY or can On Update also mean 'delete' , 'xedit', 'approve', etc.?
