Parent/Child Error

Ok. This is my second post, so wish me luck.

I've finally played around enough to get to the point of importing data, and of course, I'm having problems.

The error I get is as follows:

Record 1: The salesRepRef element contains an invalid reference or the parent hierarchy is not complete. Please correct the file and import again. <salesRepRef> <name>1 George Cain</name></salesRepRef>

It does this for every record. I've tried removing the leading '1' from the Sales Rep name, but I get nothing. Am I supposed to have some data in the salesRepRef field?
