Exporting items in a format that can be re-imported

I need to create a number of new inventory items that are similar to existing items.  I was hoping that I could export the items I'm interested in, modify them in Excel, and import them back into NetSuite.  But the import and export formats seem to have been developed totally separately - ie I can't find a 'view' for my inventory list that matches the format that the import needs.  Have I overlooked something, or do I have to go customize a view from scratch?
