Full Customer download

My company is requesting our IT department to perform a full download of our NetSuite customer data.  We currently have 1 million customer records in NetSuite.  Is it feasible to attempt to get the data through the web service or just easier to do the download manually.  I realize that the manual download has to be broken up.  We had a developer create a multi threaded web service interface against the 2.6 version and it runs at 2 minutes for every 1000 records which is not really acceptable and it sometimes will time out.  Is the 2008 version of the web service any faster?
