Add/Update Contacts Complications

I have a number of contacts that need to either be added to existing customers or update existing contact information under an existing customer. I used customer internal IDs to attach the customers and had only 1683 of the 2868 records upload successfully. I got a lot of errors that said there were multiple internal IDs: Matched more than one record (internalIds 105450 and 45066)

I also looked up some of the "successful" contact uploads, only to find that they weren't there. Does anyone have any suggesstions as to how to make this work?
