Importing Address Sublists--overwriting for Individuals only?

I imported a huge chunk of additional addresses for our customer records, and the import seemed to work properly, but now I find that the first address in the import overwrote the existing addresses--but for Individual customers only. For Company customers, the addresses did not overwrite. What did I do wrong, and how can I ensure it does not happen in the future?
