CSV Import of Custom Item Fields Help

I am trying to do an CSV item import to update a 'free form text' custom field for the item short descriptions for my website.  For some reason this item field does not show up on the fielding mapping section of the import assistant.

Can someone please shed some light on why some of the custom item fields are available for CSV import updating and others are not.  I have a large number of custom item fields - all sorts of types - and the majority of them show up, but some of the important ones do not.  Why? or How can I get them there?
