Export to xlsx straight away when clicking the green icon

Hi, when I export to xls by clicking the green excel icon at the top of a search, then it starts pumping the data into a very old xls-version ('97 I believe) which results in way too big files.
I cannot find the setting to make the green icon export immediately to xlsx  (or another more recent version than '97)
Any advise is welcome!
