Keeping track of employee certifications

Our employees are required to maintain a variety of certifications and we need to know who has what and if their certs are expired.  Is there any way to create custom fields in the employee entity form and have those field accessible to the employee in their employee center?  If they only had access to these custom fields, they could then login and edit their own certifications.
