Auto Generated Employee ID Preferences

This is sometimes generating FirstName Lastname, sometimes Lastname, Firstname.    Just getting set up in NS so haven't imported our list of employees/users yet, not sure we will autogenerate the ID, but this seems random, and I can't find anywhere a preference is set for one way or another.  Any help appreciated.  Great thanks.
