Setting Default List values

I'm trying to set a default value for a dropdown list when the form opens. I'm using the PageInit function and I know the code is firing because I've used a Alert inside the function. I''ve tried to following two commands with no luck. Please advise.


nlapiSetFieldValue('purchasetaxcode', 11165);
nlapiSetFieldText('purchasetaxcode', 'XX');
