validating field

i am validating predefined field for accepting only characters but not any special characters ,i could do this only for first letter in the string passed to field using javascript so i would like to do this using charAt so that i can check each and every letter in string but i am unable to do this ,how can i make it work? can we use regular expressions in javascript  for netsuite scripts if so how?
