Search results: Earliest date in 2 fields

I have 2 different date fields and want to sort results in ascending order by the earliest of the two dates. One date is on the Customer record, and the other date is on a custom record (child of Customer).

How can I do this?
With a formula field that displays the minimum value of the 2 fields?
How do I write that?
