date field too long

We have created a sub form that will contain date fields (data type date).   However the date fields are about 4 times too long to hold a simple date.  Is there an easy way to have the default field created by NetSuite size a bit more appropriately. 

I imagine I could cast the date field as a string and then size the field, but was looking if there was a setting for date field (data type date) we missed.
