nlapiMergeTemplate – How/When To Use?

I could use a good example of the new nlapiMergeTemplate API, especially in light of this function replacing nlapiMergeEmail (my understanding).  Also it has an additional “fields” parameter as well – how is that used?

Any examples anyone?
