Hiding values in Select dropdowns

Hi all,

This might seem like an odd thing to do but I want to vary the list of values in the 'Status' field of a lead/prospect. We have a client that has different classes of leads and prospects and the process by which they are converted into customers involves different lead and prospect stages.

So what I want to achieve is...

If the type of lead is x - only display values a, b & c in the lead status field
If the type of lead is y - only display values d, e & f in the lead status field
