Cannot nlapiSubmitField on Customer - Error

I have a User Event server-side script that attempts to set some values on a Customer via nlapiSubmitField.

Problem is, for some customer it works just fine, but other I get the following error:

"Payments have been accepted from the top level parent.  The top level parent can not be changed."

That almost sounds like it makes sense except that I am modifying ONLY custom fields (so they can't possibly have anything to do with payments) and that, if I try to make the modifications my sript does manually using the GUI, I have no problem at all.

I have submitted Case #717896 regarding this.
