Customizing Login and Logout

Has anyone been able to get the Customizing Login and Logout functionality added in release 2009.1 to work? It does not work as documented. Every time I post I get redirected back to the default system login instead of my custom login page. The documentation also does not explain how to display the error from the login although it claims the following:[INDENT]
"Now, when someone attempts to log in on your hosted page and fails, an error indicating the problem displays on your custom login page."
