Scripting to check if a date is in a closed period?

Hi,

We use sales orders as a rolling order for a monthly service.  We have a single sales order that is raised when the service starts (rather than having a memorised monthly SO).

When the client cancels the service our process is that the single sales order is edited and an end date is put into the SO.

I want to be able to validate this date to make sure the end date can't be in a closed period.

I presume I need to script this but I can't find any reference to how I can check whether a date is in a closed period.
