Custom List on PO is showing mandatory without the Mandatory check box selected

A Custom list on the PO is viewed as mandatory. On clicking on PO and 'Customize", Under the Screen Fields tab, Main subtab,  the 'Show' field is selected, but not the "Mandatory" field. Why is it mandatory when it the 'Mandatory' field is not even selected. How would you change that?
