How do I source in items from a UPC scan?

I'm trying to create a custom record so a product tester would be able to scan the UPC code on the package and then the item information would appear. Simple sourcing I know, but it appears that the item record can't use the UPC code as the source.

This would really help our efficiency and speed for testing.
