Suitelet vs. Custom Form

Hello, I have some pretty major design changes that I would like to make to the opportunity form.  The standard customizations are pretty limited in how you can layout the pages.  I have been doing some reading on Suitelet Forms and wonder if I should go down that path.  I would love to have the ability to design my form using html.  I have a background in web development but it has been a while so I would consider myself a novice/intermediate at best. I'm wondering at what point do I take the leap and try and create what I
