carriage returns in transaction items

I want to be able to store an option field in an item transaction that has return characters in it.  For example:

some info
some more info

It seems to work when it's first set, but any time the sales order is edited, the returns are replaced with spaces.  Is there a way to have it keep the (rather crude) formatting?
